Dear Parents and Students: My name is Kara Robinson. This is my second year at Lone Peak and I am VERY excited to be part of this great school and community. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Math Education. I then spent three years teaching at Fort Herriman Middle School in Herriman, UT. After that, I had the opportunity to open the Sylvan Learning Center in American Fork as the Director of Education. Prior to coming to Lone Peak, I returned from a great volunteer experience teaching English in St. Petersburg, Russia. I have a great love and passion for teaching and look forward to a great year!
What Will We Be Learning? Algebra 2 extends Algebra 1 concepts to include solving systems of equations, modeling real‑world problems with linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, and using the properties of the complex number system. The concept of function is used as an important unifying theme in this class.
What Should I Already Know? Algebra I and Geometry
What Book Will We Be Using? Prentice Hall Mathematics Algebra 2
What Materials do I need for Class? 3-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, calculator (TI-83, TI-84), a PENCIL, and a positive attitude
Do I Have to Go To Class and Be on Time? Of Course!! I support and follow the school’s established policies including those on attendance and tardies.
What does Miss Robinson Expect of Me? I expect students to come to class prepared with all materials and ready to be respectful to themselves and all others in the class by not disrupting the learning environment. I expect each student to be responsible for his or her own learning and to NEVER cheat in any way.
What is the Daily Routine? (normally but not ALWAYS):
10 minutes: starter quiz on previous class’ material
10ish minutes: go over homework from previous class
30-40 minutes: lesson on new material
10 minutes: questions and in-class problems to check understanding
Time left: get started on homework
Last 5 minutes: concept check and clean-up
Can I Turn in My Homework Late? Homework is due the class period following the period it is assigned. Homework will be accepted late for partial credit (see Homework Grading) until the day of the chapter test.
What Happens if I Miss a Day of Class? In the case of an excused absence, missed homework is due one class period AFTER the original due date. After that it is counted as late.
How Will I Be Graded?
Assignments will be graded on a 10-point scale
1 point-done in pencil/right format
1 point-complete (every problem done)
2 points-all work shown
3 points-on time
3 points-correct answers
Grading Criteria:
1. Assignments: 20%
Assignments include any assignment completed in class or assigned to do at home. They are always due the class period following the period they are assigned. Completing all assignments is important in assuring student's understanding and preparation for tests.
2. Quizzes: 10%
Throughout each quarter we will periodically have quizzes that will cover less material than the tests but will be a good way to determine students' preparedness for tests.
3. Tests 60% (one test per quarter may be re-taken)
Tests are the most important part of the grade and it is very important to be prepared for each test on the day of the test. We will have around 3 tests and a final each quarter. The final will cover all material from that quarter. I will allow one mercy test per quarter that allows students to retake one test of their choice (not the final) to improve their score.
4. Participation/Notes 10%
I have found that participation and taking notes are important to ensure continual understanding. Students are required to keep a "notebook." In their notebook, students will have each of the starters that we complete at the beginning of each class. They also need all their class notes for that unit. I will do a notebook check on the day of each test and grade students accordingly. In addition to taking notes and doing starters, students are required to participate by working problems on the board. We will keep track of student participation by writing students' names on the board each time they work a problem on the board. Every two weeks the board will be erased and only those whose names are on the board will get the points for those two weeks.

A 100% – 94%
A– 93.9% – 90%
B+ 89.9% – 87%
B 86.9% – 83%
B– 82.9% – 80%
C+ 79.9% – 77%
C 76.9% – 73%
C– 72.9% – 70%
F 69.9% – 00%
