August 31/September 1 DAY 3

Today was a little rough...maybe it was just me. Here's what we did:

Geometry: We added more new vocabulary to our math language skills. We defined Line Segments, Rays, Vertex, Angle, and Congruent. We then did a practice matching to solidify our knowledge of these terms. We also practiced measuring angles with protractors and line segments with rulers.
HOMEWORK: Pg 16 #11,25-27, 41; Pg 19 #1-3, Pg 34 #12-26 (evens)

Algebra II: We had to make up for last time and ended up with a LONG day of note taking...sorry. (If you missed, you will need to borrow and copy notes from a classmate.) In our notes we discussed solving ALL types of equations and checking our answers. We also learned how to solve formulas for each variable. And finally we added in solving and graphing inequalities...even compound inequalities. REMEMBER: The difference between solving equations and solving inequalities comes in that last step. If you divide or multiply by a negative number you need to change the direction of the inequality!
HOMEWORK: Pg 21 #3-27 (multiples of 3), 39, 40, 44, 48; Pg 29 #1-31 (odd), 41, 42 (In B3, we ran out of time because of the assembly so the assignment on Pg 29 is #1-31 (every other odd), 41, 42)
(remember to check your answers on any 3 equations and any 3 inequalities...that's 6 total.)

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALGEBRA II: Upcoming unit 1 test on Thurs/Fri Sept 9/10

As always, I am here to help so please come see me with questions!!!

August 27/30 DAY 2

We are jumping right in to our class routine and the dreaded daily homework assignments. Here is what you may have missed...or perhaps forgot:

Geometry: In class we learned about Points, Lines, and Planes (see pg 6 in your textbook). We practiced making 3D models using these three terms to help us better visualize and learn their properties.
HOMEWORK: Pg 9 #12-45 (multiples of 3)

Algebra II: We did a quick review of the classification of numbers (whole, natural, integer, rational, irrational). Please know what kinds of numbers fit in these categories (see Chapter 1-1 for help). Then we took notes and did practice examples from Ch 1-2 dealing with simplifying expressions through substitution and combining like terms.
HOMEWORK: Pg 15 #1-7 (odd), 11, 17, 21-33 (multiples of 3), 37, 41, 52

PLEASE SEE ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS (before school, during lunch, or after school I am available). I am here to help!!

August 25/26 (DAY 1)

We survived our first day back...getting up WAY too early, sitting through 4 periods of boring teachers talking (except me, of course), checking out WAY too heavy textbooks, and getting lost at least once (come on, I know you did). :)

If you happened to miss us or need a reminder, here's what we did:

Geometry: We went over the Disclosure Document in depth and talked about how my classroom is run (if you have any questions, please see me...Miss Robinson).
HOMEWORK: Get your Disclosure Document signed by a parent or guardian (make sure they read it first) as well as yourself and PLEASE fill out the information section.

Algebra II: We also went over the Disclosure Document in depth and started the first homework assignment that is a review of past math classes.
HOMEWORK: Get your Disclosure Document signed by a parent or guardian AND in the textbook pg 2 #1-26 (remember NO CALCULATOR on this one).

Thanks for a great first day!!! See you next class!!

Dear Parents and Students: My name is Kara Robinson. I am new to Lone Peak and VERY excited to be part of this great school and community. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Math Education. I then spent three years teaching at Fort Herriman Middle School in Herriman, UT. After that, I had the opportunity to open the Sylvan Learning Center in American Fork as the Director of Education. Most recently, I have just returned from a great volunteer experience teaching English in St. Petersburg, Russia. I have a great love and passion for teaching and look forward to a great year!

What Will We Be Learning? Algebra 2 extends Algebra 1 concepts to include solving systems of equations, modeling real‑world problems with linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, and using the properties of the complex number system. The concept of function is used as an important unifying theme in this class.

What Should I Already Know? Algebra I and Geometry

What Book Will We Be Using? Prentice Hall Mathematics Algebra 2

What Materials do I need for Class? 3-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, calculator (TI-83, TI-84), a PENCIL, and a positive attitude

Do I Have to Go To Class and Be on Time? Of Course!! I support and follow the school’s established policies including those on attendance and tardies.

What does Miss Robinson Expect of Me? I expect students to come to class prepared with all materials and ready to be respectful to themselves and all others in the class by not disrupting the learning environment. I expect each student to be responsible for his or her own learning and to NEVER cheat in any way.

What is the Daily Routine? (normally but not ALWAYS):
10 minutes: quiz on previous class’ material
10ish minutes: go over homework from previous class
30-40 minutes: lesson on new material
10 minutes: questions and in-class problems to check understanding
Time left: get started on homework
Last 5 minutes: concept check and clean-up

Can I Turn in My Homework Late? Homework is due the class period following the period it is assigned. Homework will be accepted late for partial credit (see Homework Grading) until the day of the chapter test. If ALL assignments are turned in on-time throughout the entire unit, the student will have the opportunity to re-take the unit test if desired.

What Happens if I Miss a Day of Class? In the case of an excused absence, missed homework is due one class period AFTER the original due date. After that it is counted as late.

How Will I Be Graded?
Homework will be graded on a 10-point scale
1 point-done in pencil/right format
1 point-complete (every problem done)
2 points-all work shown
3 points-on time
3 points-correct answers

Grading Criteria:
1. Assignments: 20%
2. Quizzes: 10%
3. Tests 60%
4. Participation/Notes 10%

Grading Scale:
A 100% – 94%
A– 93.9% – 90%

What Will We Be Learning? Students investigate geometric concepts such as reasoning and proof, the properties of parallel and perpendicular lines, congruency, similarity, shapes, area and volume. An emphasis is placed on using manipulatives and hands-on explorations. The major postulates and theorems of Euclidean geometry form the basis of this course. In addition, students will use right triangle trigonometry to model problems from the real world. Both inductive and deductive reasoning are emphasized.
